Peashooter in Plants vs. Zombies: What It Does and How It Works
Peashooter is one of the most recognizable plants in Plants vs. Zombies. It is also the first plant introduced in the original game. It is available from the beginning of Level 1-1. Its job is to shoot peas at zombies moving along the same lane. For new players, it provides the first introduction to ranged attacks and the basic strategy of protecting your lawn.
What Is Peashooter?
Peashooter is a basic ranged plant that attacks zombies by firing peas. In the original Plants vs. Zombies, it costs 100 Sun and has 300 toughness. Each normal pea deals 20 damage, and the plant fires once every 1.425 seconds. Its range is straight ahead, so it can only attack zombies in the same row. The plant also has a fast recharge. This makes it easy to replace during a level and allows players to build several Peashooters without waiting too long between placements.
Its role is straightforward, but positioning still matters. A Peashooter should be placed in a lane where zombies are approaching, with enough distance between the plant and the zombies to give it time to attack before they reach it.
Why Is Peashooter Important?
Peashooter is the player’s basic source of ranged firepower at the start of the original game. Before Snow Pea becomes available at Level 1-6, it is the game’s main long-range offensive plant. Even after other attackers become available, its lower 100-Sun cost can still make it useful when you need inexpensive firepower.
It also works well with defensive plants. For example, placing a Wall-nut in front of a Peashooter gives the zombie something to attack while the Peashooter continues firing from behind it. This simple combination introduces an important part of Plants vs. Zombies: plants become more useful when their abilities and positions work together.
Peashooter and Torchwood
Peashooter can also benefit from Torchwood. When a normal pea passes through Torchwood’s flames, it becomes a fire pea. In the original game, these peas deal twice the normal damage and also produce weaker splash damage. This gives players a way to increase the damage of a group of Peashooters without replacing them with a completely different attacking plant.

The combination is particularly useful when several zombies are grouped together, because the burning peas can affect more than one target.
Is Peashooter Still Useful Later?
As players unlock more plants, Peashooter becomes less specialized. Plants such as Repeater can fire multiple peas, while Snow Pea adds a slowing effect to its attacks. Other plants provide area damage, defensive abilities, or special effects. That does not make Peashooter useless. Its 100-Sun cost and fast recharge remain useful when Sun is limited or when a player needs another basic attacker quickly. Its straightforward attack can also be useful as part of a larger plant combination.
However, Peashooter has some limitations. It attacks only in a straight line and does not have a built-in special effect. On roof levels, ordinary peashooting plants also have difficulty firing over the sloped section of the roof, so their positioning becomes more restrictive.
Peashooter in Plants vs. Zombies 2
Peashooter also returns in Plants vs. Zombies 2. Its basic role remains almost unchanged. At level 1, it costs 100 Sun, has 300 toughness, and deals 20 damage per pea. It fires approximately every 1.35 to 1.5 seconds, depending on the version and game data.

The sequel adds Plant Food, giving Peashooter a much stronger temporary attack. When Plant Food is used, it rapidly fires a barrage of peas. In the standard version, the Plant Food attack fires 60 peas in two seconds.
This gives the familiar plant a much stronger burst of damage when the player needs to deal with a dangerous group of zombies.
Peashooter Beyond the Tower-Defense Games
The Peashooter also became a playable character in the Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare series and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. Instead of being planted on the ground, it becomes a mobile combat character.
In Battle for Neighborville, Peashooter uses the Pea Cannon as its primary weapon and has abilities including Chili Bean Bomb, Pea Gatling, and Pea Suped.
Despite these changes, the central idea remains the same: Peashooter is a plant that fights using peas.
Final Thoughts
Peashooter is simple by design, but it plays an important role in Plants vs. Zombies. In the original game, it teaches players how ranged attacks, Sun costs, lane positioning, and plant combinations work. Its 100-Sun price and fast recharge make it an accessible attacker, while its straightforward mechanics make it easy for beginners to understand.
Later games expanded the character with Plant Food, new animations, and playable shooter versions, but the basic identity never changed. Whether it is sitting behind a Wall-nut on the lawn or running into battle with a Pea Cannon, Peashooter remains one of the defining plants in the Plants vs. Zombies series.
